This strategy is not new to internet marketers but i am not seeing it use on offline business… hmmm maybe one or twice, not much.
Harv illustrates this “outrageous offer” with a ice cream store business in downdown San Francisco
This ice cream man, lets call him Mr X, wanted to increase his profit selling his brand of yummy home made ice cream. He knew it is awesome, but he is not making much from the business.
So… like as poor marketer, he spent $40,000 to engage some advertising firm to write the sales copy, do all the advertising tasks for him. Sad to say, the advertising firm did not do a good job. They advertised in the national newspaper and people will not travel from New York to San Francisco just to eat an ice cream! Stupid? But this is what the advertising firm has done. Moreover, the sales copy suck and did not bring in the customers that it supposes to do.
He lost money!

On the day itself, thousand upon thousand and thousand of people flock to this small icecream store to get a taste of the ice cream. As the ice man man served the ice cream, he is also handing out the frequent buyer discount coupon. The coupon entitled anyone to receive a free ice cream after the 10 purchase.
All in all, he spent $40,000 for offering the free ice cream on that day, but the advertising is going to bring him lot and lot of customers in the future. Why?
1) First, thousand of people have tasted the yummy ice cream. Do you not think they will come back again?
2) Secondly, they have a frequent buyer coupon sitting in their wallet. They want to take advantage of it and thus increase the ice cream sales.
3) Thirdly, it create a viral or word of mouth marketing effect where everyone in town is excited and telling their friends or families about the event. At the same time, they are building up anticipation when the Free ice cream event draw near.
One of the success of this Free ice cream campaign have everything to do with the copywriting skill that Harv has done on the mail order that are sent out to entice the people to come for the ice cream.
Think about it… if the mail order is not written such that it caught the eyes of the readers and get them to take action to come back to taste the Free ice cream, will the Free ice cream campaign work?
No! Even though this is a freaking awesome marketing strategy.
